9/11 RESOURCE LIST

Though many of the programs have come to an end there are still many people who continue to suffer disaster-associated physical and mental health conditions. It is my sincere desire to point, anyone who does not know where to start, in the right direction.  The following is a list of resources, many that I have used personally.  If anyone would like to communicate with me please do not hesitate to use my e-mail address jleigh124@yahoo.com.  I will respond as quickly as possible.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Katie Sawert for providing this space for the 9/11 Resources and for joining me in
New York to appear on the show. Thank you, Pat Brady, producer of “Attack on American Freedom” and Sylvia Mok for making the introductions that made all of this happen.

1.         HEALTH INSURANCE - To receive help with free or low-cost health insurance in NYC, call 311 and ask for Health Stat (includes Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus).

2.         NEW YORK STATE WORKERS’ COMPENSATION DEADLINE FOR 9/11 WORKERS - The Workers’ Compensation Law has been amended to protect your right to file for 9/11-related workers’ compensation if you become sick in the future. In order to file a claim, you must first register with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board no later than August 14, 2008. Registration is available for most workers and volunteers who participated in 9/11-related rescue, recovery, or clean-up. Registering now will protect your right to file for 9/11-related workers’ compensation should you develop a latent disease in the future. If you miss this deadline, you will not be eligible to file a 9/11-related workers compensation claim in the future. How to register: Complete and submit a registration form (Form WTC-12) to the Workers’ Compensation Board.
To obtain a registration form, call (877) 632-4996 or visit
ww.wcb.state.ny.us/content/main/forms/WTC-12.pdf to download a form. Informational pamphlets are available at no cost at the Board district offices and by mail: WCB Executive Offices, 20 Park Street, Albany, NY 12207. For more information, you may also visit www.wcb.state.ny.us or call (877) 632-4996.

3.         MEDICAL SCREENING, EXAMS AND TREATMENT - Bellevue Hospital WTC Healthcare Center, funded by the New York City Mayor’s Initiative and the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund, works in coordination with community groups including the Beyond Ground Zero Network, the 9/11 Environmental Action committee, the WTC Residents Coalition, and local community boards. Residents, responders, downtown workers and office workers who have symptoms that they feel are due to exposure to the dust and debris resulting from the WTC collapse are eligible for the treatment program. Individuals enrolled in the program are evaluated and treated for WTC-related illnesses. The program includes comprehensive medical evaluations, breathing tests, and mental health screening. Residents, WTC responders and volunteers, and downtown workers may contact the Bellevue Hospital WTC Healthcare Center by calling (212) 562-1720.

4.         CLINICAL GUIDELINES FOR PHYSICIANS TREATING ADULTS EXPOSED TO THE WTC DISASTER
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/wtc/index.html
The August 2006 issue of City Health Information describes common physical and mental health problems that could be caused or exacerbated by exposure to the WTC disaster and provides information for physicians to diagnose, treat and, if necessary, refer patients for additional evaluation and treatment.

5.         WORLD TRADE CENTER HEALING SERVICES – ST VINCENT’S HOSPITAL

Saint Vincent’s Hospital Trauma and Wellness Center provides mental health counseling, psychiatric consultations, complementary services, including ear acupuncture, at no cost to anyone affected by September 11th.   The counseling program is staffed with licensed professional clinicians to treat individuals suffering from psychological traumas, including 9/11.  The various populations that have been served and continue to be served are family members, first responders, evacuees, New York City residents, and downtown businesses.  The program also services individuals with 9/11-related medical conditions, providing free psychological services, psychiatry and medication. In addition to serving those directly affected by 9/11, the program also provides services to at-risk individuals, including survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and others with a history of trauma.  The program also has a team of clinicians who work in the New York City elementary, middle schools, and high schools to serve children, adolescents and parents as well as serving teachers and other school personnel.  Staff provides trainings and psychoeducation workshops on topics such as: psychological trauma, resiliency, suicide prevention, violence prevention, evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents and stress management to outside mental health agencies and corporate businesses. Call Michelle Neary, intake coordinator, at 212-346-2582.

6.         World Cares – September Space http://www.worldcares.org/programs/septemberspace
The long-term recovery of any community suffering from disaster requires the involvement of community members – at the earliest time possible. Through dynamic partnerships, World Cares Center gathers the services of caregivers and community leaders to continue providing long-term recovery programs for disaster-stricken communities – long after the relief agencies have withdrawn their support.

World Cares Center’s September Space Community Resiliency Centers (“September Space”), located in New York City, help communities affected by disaster, emergencies and trauma to restore their social, emotional, and physical wellbeing. The groups we serve include Lower Manhattan residents, workers, students, caregivers from community-based programs, minority populations who experience barriers to services, disaster survivors, disaster volunteers, responders, recovery workers, and returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.

From these groups we have learned that there is an ongoing need for supportive services as individuals move through the stages of recovery at their own pace, they benefit from the long-term availability of different forms of support. Equally important, experience has taught us that disaster workers, including official responders and both affiliated and unaffiliated volunteers, need to learn to care for themselves as they care for others. It is essential in order to avoid burn-out, compassion fatigue, depression, and other physical and mental illness, and to deal with the symptoms of these illnesses when they do occur. September Space responds to these needs with an array of comprehensive services.

7.         HOLD THE DOOR FOR OTHERS - http://www.holdthedoor.com/resources.htm
A September 11th inspired nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to empower people to grow through loss and adversity and achieve their dreams.

8.         The Center for Trauma Program Innovation A program of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services - http://www.naswnyc.org/new_copy/invasion/fear_anxiety.html - These are extraordinary times filled with threats that evoke fear, uncertainty and anxiety.  How does one go about daily life while simultaneously balancing being on alert with the need to keep from over-reacting? As mental health professionals, the message we should convey is that people can learn “how to function effectively in spite of being afraid.” We are not telling people “don’t be afraid."
In these uncertain times, each of us needs to work to promote resiliency and adaptive coping strategies. Part of this effort involves integrating the useful knowledge we now have about how the brain processes threats,1how going into survival mode affects thinking and behavior,2 and how the use of expanded concepts of safety can promote adaptive coping.

THE ROCK BLOSSOM SANGHA AND THICH NHAT HANH http://www.rockblossom.org/
The Rock Blossom Sangha is inspired by the teachings and practice of Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh; we belong to the international Sangha which he founded: the Order of Interbeing, a "fourfold community" of lay women and men, nuns and monks. We are a grassroots Sangha, beginners and more experienced practitioners learning from and supporting one other on the path of awakening. Our aspiration is to bring mindfulness, concentration, and insight to daily living. During our sessions, we apply the practice of conscious breathing to sitting and walking, as well as communicating with compassionate listening and loving speech. Our gatherings also reflect the values of openness. For example, many members continue to participate within other religious or ethical traditions. And, while we are determined to avoid an attachment to narrow or partisan doctrines, we do share a commitment to opposing oppression and social injustice.
